Over the past four years, I have relocated from Hong Kong to Sheffield, UK. This journey of shifting identities has prompted me to reflect deeply on what it means to be "Hongkongers." Through a series of metal badges — a medium small in scale but rich in symbolism — I aim to capture and distill the unique cultural qualities, beliefs, and aspirations of Hong Kong people.
The series consists of five pieces, each representing a core theme: Justice, Freedom, Fight Till the End, Be Water, and Wisdom and Courage. These themes draw from my collective memories of Hong Kong society and serve as a personal exploration of my cultural roots. Each badge acts as a condensed emblem, preserving the persistence and emotions that emerged during turbulent times in Hong Kong.
Throughout the creative process, I not only revisited the cultural context of Hong Kong, but also examined these values through the lens of my life in the UK. Living in Britain has revealed that, despite different cultural backgrounds, the pursuit of freedom and justice, and the resilience and adaptability in the face of pressure, are universal values. These resonances have reminded me that identity is not solely defined by geography, but by how we respond, act, and reflect during times of uncertainty.
These badges are more than commemorative objects — they are an inquiry into, and a continuation of, cultural identity. With this series, I invite viewers to consider how the values we hold dear can move, collide, and evolve across different lands.
